A police officer from the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) was hit Monday evening by the driver of a suspicious vehicle who then fled in Saint-Laurent, in the northwest of Montreal.
The hit-and-run occurred as part of an investigation into a suspected car theft, a scourge that disproportionately affects the metropolis.
Around 6:20 p.m., a duo of SPVM police officers – including the victim – were investigating a possibly stolen vehicle on Halpern Street, near the Trans-Canada Highway, in Saint-Laurent. A second vehicle then approached before turning around in sight of the police.
The latter then followed the suspect vehicle and attempted to intercept it a few streets further, in the industrial sector of rue Diab. While the officers were out of their patrol car, the driver of the suspect vehicle drove into the officer before fleeing.
The police then fired, and the suspect continued to flee on foot, reports Jeanne Drouin, media relations officer for the SPVM.
A large perimeter was established at the scene for investigation purposes. A canine unit was deployed to try to locate the suspect.
The policewoman was taken to hospital for injuries that did not endanger her life, specifies Mme Drouin.
