Montpellier, Rennes, Toulouse and Caen are among the best student cities in 2024, according to the magazine’s annual ranking The Studentpublished Wednesday July 3.

For the year 2024, Montpellier takes the lead in the ranking, with 99 points obtained out of 121. The magazine assures that this is largely due to its “training offer” and its transport policy. “The city has moved to completely free transport for all residents, the only community in the ranking to have reached this milestone to date”it is explained. Rennes takes second place in the ranking with 94 points. Caen and Toulouse rise to third place on the podium ex aequo, with 90 points each. Grenoble (87 points), Angers (85 points), Strasbourg (85 points), Lyon (85 points), Besançon (85 points) and Nantes (84 points) complete the top 10 of the general ranking.

The magazine notes that rents are experiencing inflation in 41 of the 47 cities in its ranking. If this increase is around “14 euros on average”She “is much more important for some, like Marseille-Aix-en-Provence (+57 euros), La Rochelle (+47 euros) or Annecy (+43 euros)”. But The Student maintains that in gross value, “Paris remains by far the most expensive city in France,” with a “average budget of 991 euros for a studio”.

Methodology :

47 urban units where more than 8,000 students live were analyzed through 13 indicators. These criteria include the presence of night transport, the attractiveness of the city, the health offer, the training offer or even the local initiatives set up to welcome and support young people. This 18th ranking was obtained via a questionnaire sent in February 2024 to the participating cities and through public data provided by INSEE, the Ministry of Higher Education or the Ministry of Culture.
