Montérégie | Northvolt buys land where it will build its battery factory

(Carignan) The Swedish company Northvolt, which intends to build a huge vehicle battery factory in Montérégie, has acquired 18.5 million square feet of land located in McMasterville and Saint-Basile-le- Great for making your project a reality.

The land was formerly the site of the Canadian Industries Limited (CIL) explosives factory; it has been unexploited for almost 25 years.

The transaction was announced Wednesday by Quartier MC2, a company owned by Gestionimmobilier GAP, which had been the owner since 2015. The amount of the transaction was not announced.

Quartier MC2 reports that the site was exploited by heavy industry and that the soils were contaminated, but that the place will be revitalized for the benefit of an industry that produces green energy.

Northvolt will receive colossal financial assistance of 7.3 billion from the governments of Canada and Quebec to carry out its project. Last month, the company said it plans to prepare the factory site this fall, begin construction of some buildings in 2024, deliver products to customers in 2026 and complete the first phase of construction in 2028.

Last month, Northvolt executives held an information session for citizens affected by their project.
