The tragedy occurred around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday on Chemin Sainte-Thérèse, in a roadwork area where traffic was alternating, thanks to intermittent lights.

“A vehicle arrived at the entrance to the work area and hit the signalman,” said the captain at the Richelieu-Saint-Laurent intermunicipal police board, Sébastien Guillemette, on Wednesday.

The man was taken to hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead.

The case is being treated as a criminal event. The driver has been arrested, but not yet charged.

Reconstitutionalists from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) were called in as reinforcements. CNESST inspectors will also go to the scene since the death of the signalman occurred while he was on duty, said Captain Guillemette.

The Association of Road Sign Workers of Quebec (ATSRQ) reacted Wednesday evening to the death of the signalman by calling on employers to better equip their workers and by demanding increased surveillance from police forces around municipal construction sites and from the Quebec Ministry of Transport. .

2e deadly accident

This is the second fatal accident to occur in less than a week at the same location.

Last Saturday evening, two teenagers on a scooter were hit by a driver, also on Chemin Saint-Thérèse, where the construction site was. One of them died.

“Checks made following this event lead us to believe that there was no problem with the signage,” explained Sébastien Guillemette.
