Monobob | De Bruin wins gold in Latvia

(Sigulda) Canada’s Christine de Bruin won her second gold of the season, winning the monobob event at the World Cup in Latvia on Saturday.

A native of Stoney Plain, Alta., De Bruin set a track record by completing his second round with a time of 53.77 seconds. His combined time of 1: 48.12 on two runs earned him the gold medal.

De Bruin, who triumphed in Altenberg, Germany on December 18, leads the overall World Cup standings in a monobob.

Austria’s Breeana Walker took second place on Saturday, while Russia’s Nadezhda Sergeeva captured the bronze medal.

In the two-man bobsleigh event, Canadians Justin Kripps and Ryan Sommer placed fourth.

Rostislav Gaitiukevich and Mikhail Mordasov of Russia won the race, followed by Britons Brad Hall and Greg Cackett as well as Austrians Benjamin Maier and Markus Sammer.

The Canadian bobsleigh team was hit by an outbreak of COVID-19 earlier this week. Eleven athletes and three coaches were placed in segregation. The team remained in Latvia during the holiday break to minimize risks from the virus.
