Quebecer Alexis Lafrenière scored in overtime to give the New York Rangers a 2-1 victory against the Colorado Avalanche on Monday.

Lafrenière accepted a pass from Mika Zibanejad entering the zone before cutting to the net to score his 13e goal of the season. It was his third career goal in overtime.

Goaltender Jonathan Quick, who made 32 saves, collected his first assist in a Rangers uniform during the sequence.

Artemi Panarin was the other scorer for the Rangers, who increased their lead at the top of the Metropolitan section with this second consecutive victory. The Russian has now hit the target 31 times this season.

Nathan MacKinnon scored the first goal of the game. With his 32e goal of the campaign, he extended his streak to 14 games with at least one point.

With 85 points, MacKinnon also surpassed Peter Stastny (84 points) for the most points in his first 50 games of a season in the history of the organization.

Alexandar Georgiev blocked 27 shots in the loss. The Avalanche still collected at least one point in a fourth game in a row (3-0-1).

Islanders beat Maple Leafs 3-2

Pierre Engvall broke the deadlock at 17:58 in the third period on Monday, guiding the New York Islanders to a 3-2 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Engvall took advantage of a rebound shot from Brock Nelson.

Matthew Barzal and Kyle MacLean scored the other goals for the Islanders, who had lost their last three games.

MacLean scored with a backhand on a breakaway, coming out of the penalty box. He was serving the additional minor imposed on Bo Horvat, after a fight with Simon Benoit.

Patrick Roy now has a 2-2-1 record at the helm of the Islanders.

Mitchell Marner and captain John Tavares were the scorers for the Maple Leafs, who had won their last three games.

Auston Matthews was complicit in Marner’s goal, scoring at least one point in a seventh straight game.

Tavares tied the game on the power play at 15:12 in the third period, deflecting a Morgan Rielly shot.
