Monday in the NHL | Islanders beat Maple Leafs in overtime

Bo Horvat scored the winning goal 46 seconds into overtime and the New York Islanders defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 on Monday.

Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri each had a goal and an assist, while Casey Cizikas also scored in the victory. Noah Dobson had three assists and Ilya Sorokin finished the game with 36 saves.

John Tavares had a goal and an assist. Auston Matthews and Morgan Rielly scored the other Maple Leafs goals. William Nylander had two assists and goaltender Ilya Samsonov stopped 27 shots.

In overtime, Horvat took advantage of Mathew Barzal’s beautiful pass to score, and thus allow his team to overtake the Philadelphia Flyers in second place in the Metropolione section.

The Islanders were leading 3-1 when Tavares, a former Islanders player, closed the gap against his team with a shot from defenseman Conor Tiimmis that he redirected into the net, 7:43 into the second period.

The Sabers have the upper hand 5-2 over the Coyotes

Kyle Okposo and Eric Robinson both had a goal and two assists to help the Buffalo Sabers defeat the Arizona Coyotes 5-2 on Monday night.

JJ Peterka, Peyton Krebs, and Rasmus Dahlin also found the back of the net. Connor Clifton had two assists, while goaltender Devon Levi stopped 21 shots.

Michael Kesselring and Michael Carcone scored the goals for the Coyotes, who have lost three straight games after going on a five-game winning streak. Karel Vejmelka blocked 33 shots in his first start since November 22.

The Sabers took a 1-0 lead at 2:25 of the first period, when Okposo took advantage of a rebound to score his fifth goal of the season.

Kesselring tied the game for the Coyotes in the opening minutes of the second period. It was a first NHL goal for Kesselring.

Robinson, who was acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday, scored his first goal with the Sabers at 6:14 of the second period. His net gave the Sabers a 2-1 lead.
