The Flames are treading water

Panthers edge Ducks in overtime

Carter Verhaeghe scored the game-winning goal 1:42 into overtime as the Florida Panthers beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-3.

It’s a sixth win in their last nine games for the Panthers and a fifth straight loss for the Ducks.

Eric and Marc Staal, along with Ryan Lomberg also scored for the Panthers, who benefited from 24 saves from Sergei Bobrovsky.

Mason McTavish, Frank Vatrano and Dmitry Kulikov replied for the Ducks, who botched John Gibson’s 50-save effort.

However, it was the Ducks who had given themselves a 2-0 priority in the first period, after the goals of McTavish and Vatrano, on the power play.

The Panthers came from behind in second. Eric Staal made it 2-1 after just over two minutes of play. With just over two minutes left in the middle period, his brother Marc tied the game.

Logan Couture, Evgeny Svechnikov, Noah Gregor and Michael Eyssimont scored for the Sharks, who were ending a three-game losing streak.

Couture reached the milestone of 20 goals in a 10e season. He is the third player in team history to achieve the feat, after Patrick Marleau and Joe Pavelski.

Martin Jones made 19 saves, being beaten for the fourth straight time.

Erik Karlsson provided two assists, leading the Sharks with 74 points.

The club was doing without Timo Meier and Tomas Hertl, the team’s second and third scorers.

Meier suffered an upper body injury Saturday against Buffalo. He should be back Thursday, when San Jose hosts Nashville.

Hertl was absent for personal reasons. He should also return to play against the Predators.

David Pastrnak scored twice as the Boston Bruins defeated the Ottawa Senators 3-1 on Monday for a fourth straight win.

Pastrnak finished the game with 41 goals. This is his second straight season with at least 40 goals.

The NHL leader in goals this season is Connor McDavid of the Oilers, with 42.

Jake DeBrusk was the Bruins’ other scorer, while Linus Ullmark blocked 30 shots.

The Bruins will visit the Kraken on Thursday night as the starting point for four games in the West.

For the Senators, Claude Giroux scored and Kevin Mandolese made 29 saves.

The club’s next two games are in Raleigh and Montreal on Friday and Saturday.
