Capitals win in overtime

Dmitry Orlov played heroes in overtime as the Washington Capitals defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 on Monday night.

Nic Dowd scored twice within 11 seconds and Erik Gustafsson completed the scoring for the Capitals, who posted a second straight win.

For a third game in a row, Alex Ovechkin was unable to score the 801e goal of his career to join Gordie Howe for second most in NHL history.

Howe’s sons, Mark and Marty, were in the stands to possibly see Ovechkin join their father against the team for which he played 25 seasons.

The Capitals had to pull back from a two-goal deficit to win and Ovechkin started the comeback by setting up Dowd’s first goal in the second period.

Charlie Lindgren stopped 16 of 19 pucks for the Capitals in his eighth straight start.

David Perron, Oskar Sundqvist and Lucas Raymond threaded the needle in regulation time for the Red Wings, who suffered their sixth straight loss. Ville Husso made 38 saves.

Wyatt Johnston scored 55 seconds into the middle frame and the Dallas Stars prevailed 2-1 over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday to stay ahead in the Central Division.

Jason Robertson also scored for the Stars and Jake Oettinger stopped 27 shots in his 100e NHL game. Oettinger saw his shutout hopes dashed when Ken Johnson beat him with a backhand shot with 15 seconds left in the game.

The Stars have won seven of their last nine games.

Daniil Tarasov stopped 32 shots but gave up for the third straight game. The Blue Jackets have lost four straight games. They occupy the bottom rank of the Eastern Association.
