Senators beat Flames 4-3 in overtime
Tim Stützle was the overtime hero on Monday night as the Ottawa Senators scored three unanswered goals to upset the Calgary Flames 4-3.
Brady Tkachuk, Drake Batherson and Alex DeBrincat also scored for the Senators (25-24-3), while Stützle provided assists on all goals.
Mads Sogaard, who was called into the fray with injuries to both Senators goaltenders, made 34 saves.
Prior to that game, Sogaard, 22, had only three NHL games under his belt.
Dillon Dubé scored two goals for the Flames (25-19-10), while Tyler Toffoli had a goal and an assist. Jacob Markstrom stopped 21 shots.
Looking to end their road trip on a high note, the Flames hit hard in the third period. They were rewarded when Dubé scored his second goal of the night – his 15e of the season – by deflecting a shot from Toffoli.
However, the Senators weren’t ready to give up.
With 2:14 on the clock, the Senators cut the deficit to one when Batherson capitalized on a Stützle shot return, and 46 seconds later, DeBrincat tied the game at 3-3.
Calgary outshot the Senators 16-6 in the second period and completed the engagement with the lead.
Tied 1-1, the Flames scored seconds after their power play ended when Toffoli fired a shot to beat Sogaard on the glove side.
The Senators started the game a little slow, but were the first to score when Stützle allowed Tkachuk to breakaway and hit the target at 6:10 of the first period.
Placed in front of the net, on the power play, Dubé managed to deflect a shot from Noah Hanifin behind Sogaard to bring the score to 1-1.
