70% of the earth’s surface is covered by oceans. They are the “lungs of the planet” according to the Principality, the ocean absorbs 25% of all carbon dioxide emissions and captures 90% of the additional heat generated by these emissions.
The conclusion of the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is clear: “the ocean has warmed up faster over the last century than since the end of the last deglaciation, there are 11,000 years”. This regulatory role now endangers marine ecosystems.
It is therefore necessary to protect marine areas and this is the purpose of Monaco Ocean Week. This 5th edition runs until Saturday and brings together scientists, experts, NGOs and representatives of civil society throughout the week. Big discussions are planned around pollution, acidification and the loss of coral reefs.
This event is held within the framework of the Decade of the Ocean, which aims to mobilize the scientific community, political decision-makers, companies and civil society around a common program of research and technological innovation.
There are also activities for the general public!
– The screening-debate of “Mediterranean”, an international documentary series that reveals the natural wonders of the Mediterranean world but also the threats hanging over it. A preview in the presence of director-producer Gilles Dufraisse and Guillaume Nery, world record apnea.
– Reading of the adventures of Ice the Bear, the traveling bear, followed by educational quizzes and drawing competitions for children aged between 5 and 10 years old.
