Rugby player Mohamed Haouas, former player of the French XV sentenced in May 2023 to one year in prison for domestic violence, will return to the Montpellier squad, the club announces in a press release sent to France Bleu Hérault.
In a press release, the MHR explains that it wants “offer a second chance” to the pillar aged 30 years, “highlighting the club’s commitment to social inclusion and rehabilitation”. Mohamed Haouas will therefore return to the squad next summer with a one-season contract, “conditioned by exemplary behavior”.
“I would like to thank the MHR and President Mohed Altrad for reaching out to me and offering me a new chance where many turned their backs on me”reacts the player in the same press release. “I have already taken steps, with the help of the club, with a Montpellier association which will help me to work on myself and on the actions that I may have made and that I regret.”
A second conviction in June 2023
The pillar with 16 selections for the French team was sentenced to one year in prison on May 30 by the Montpellier criminal court for hitting his wife in front of the shopping center where she works. He was also sentenced in June 2023 to 18 months in prison, nine of which were closed, for “aggravated violence” committed during a fight on January 1, 2014. The player appealed this decision.
After this new legal conviction, ASM Clermont, which had just recruited him for the season, had given up on welcoming him into its workforce. The French Rugby Federation had also announced the end of his international career. It was ultimately the Biarritz club that played him this season.
