(New York) Jeremiah Green, founding drummer of rock band Modest Mouse, died days after the band announced he had been diagnosed with cancer. He was 45 years old.
“Today we lost our dear friend Jeremiah. He lay down to rest and just passed out,” read a statement released by the band on Saturday. “Thank you for appreciating all the love you give, receive, have given and will receive. Above all, Jeremiah was a love story. »
Green was still a young teenager when he joined the newly formed band Modest Mouse, which included vocalist-guitarist Isaac Brock and bassist Eric Judy. Modest Mouse was originally based in Issaquah, a suburb of Seattle, before being relocated to Portland. Its name comes from a quote by Virginia Woolf, who described everyday individuals as “lowly mouse-colored people”.
Influenced by Talking Heads and XTC, among others, Modest Mouse debuted in 1996 with the album This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About and made a name for himself with critics before finding mainstream success with his fourth album, Good News for People Who Love Bad Newsand with the singles Float On and Ocean Breathes Salty.
Green had a breakdown on leaving Good News for People Who Love Bad News, in 2004, and briefly left the group. He returned there for more recent albums, including Strangers to Ourselves and The Golden Casketreleased in 2021.
