Employees of a McDonald’s restaurant in Marseille ended up taking over the establishment and transforming it into an emergency food bank. The Après M, inaugurated a year ago, is now having cash flow difficulties. An online prize pool was launched in September.
A restaurant from an American giant that has become a social and solidarity fast food restaurant, in the heart of the northern districts of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). Nine months after its opening, the place is in financial difficulty, its founders call for help. It is noon, the first customers arrive, some out of solidarity. Après M needs cash. It needs 240,000 euros per year to operate.
1,200 euros raised
So the rap scene mobilizes around a free concert, to accompany the launch of a support fund. L’ Après M, a symbol of the northern districts of the city, a former McDonald’s taken over by its employees after four years of union struggle. The ambition: to create a social and supportive integration restaurant. Successful bet. Here burgers are sold from 2 euros and around 10 euros for full menus. The profits are then used to finance food aid.
The prize pool has so far raised 1,200 euros. Managers and volunteers at L’après M hope for much more, so that the social utopia continues to be a reality.
