MNBAQ: 20th Century American Art Featured in Summer 2022

The Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec will celebrate the American art of the last century next summer by presenting America: between dream and excess, an exhibition made up of a hundred works from the prestigious Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington.

“This is our big summer 2022 exhibition,” confirmed MNBAQ communications director Linda Tremblay.

The paintings, sculptures, videos and photographs of 90 artists of various origins will compose the material ofAmerica …, which will be on view as a world exclusive, at the Lassonde pavilion, from June 2 to September 5, 2022.

This information appears in a document from the City of Quebec confirming the award of a $ 500,000 grant to the MNBAQ under the Financial Assistance Measure for State Museums for major international exhibitions.

The exhibition, it is said, will present “a vast panorama of American art from the 20th century.e century, covering the period from 1910 to today ”. However, we will have to wait to find out which artists will be featured.

The project is the result of a partnership between the MNBAQ and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, a national museum of modern and contemporary art integrated into the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.

After exhibiting works by Frida Kahlo, JW Turner and Pablo Picasso, since the beginning of 2020, the Lassonde pavilion is currently opening its doors and its walls to Quebec artist Serge Lemoyne, until January 9.

Before the arrival of the works ofAmerica: between dream and excess, at the end of spring, the MNBAQ will jointly host at the Lassonde pavilion, from February to April, the Québec Biennale, as part of the 10th edition of Manif d’art, as well as the exhibition Latent energies, based on works by Paul-Émile Borduas.
