His love affair with the Quebec metropolis began while he was studying at the National Theater School of Canada, rue Saint-Denis, at the turn of the 1980s. Henry Czerny returned there a few times during his career, recently for the filming of Scream VI and series The Venery of Samantha Bird. The writers’ strike, however, interrupted the latter.
“I love the joie de vivre of Montreal [il a dit l’expression en français], which is very different from the rest of Canada. I love the architecture, the flavor, the history… lists the 64-year-old actor. The last time I was there was during the second half of winter and the beginning of spring. Regardless of the period, it’s a wonderful time to be in Montreal. And I love food, of course! »

The theme of gastronomy will recur throughout our interview. Henry Czerny also believes that the experience of going to the cinema is similar to that of eating in a good restaurant. “I want to convince people to see the film the same way they would eat a meal from L’Express [à Montréal] or Lucas Cardboard [à Paris]. »
Of course, you can order takeout, as you can wait a few months and watch the movie at home. But to really taste all the flavors, go to the movies with lots of other people to experience the moment with them.

Le fameux aquarium
En 1996, Henry Czerny ne se doutait pas que Mission : Impossible allait devenir une série de superproductions ambitieuses qui tenterait de se surpasser à chaque volet. Il se souvient encore très bien du tournage de la fameuse scène dans un restaurant de Prague qui se termine par l’explosion d’un gigantesque aquarium.
« Travailler avec Tom sur cette scène est mon souvenir le plus mémorable du premier film, confie-t-il. Elle est assez longue, en particulier pour Kittridge, qui divulgue beaucoup d’information. Je me rappelle que je m’efforçais de rester dans le moment présent. Ce qui est fabuleux d’être face à Tom, c’est qu’il est tellement concentré que tout ce que j’avais à faire était de le regarder et de lui répondre. »
[Brian] De Palma was filming us from a low angle and I wondered why. When I saw the film, I understood that he wanted the aquarium to remain visible so that the public would not forget it. There is also a tribute to this plan in the new film.

Henry Czerny watched all of the sequels with interest, but wasn’t looking forward to the phone call to reprise his role as Eugene Kittridge, director of the original chapter’s Impossible Mission Force (IMF). However, he did not hesitate when asked to return, 27 years after the first part of the series.
“I am very happy that I was given the opportunity to reprise the role, confides the actor. The younger Kittridge thought he knew a lot, but he obviously didn’t. Since he was fooled [schooled] by Ethan Hunt, he held different positions in various agencies in order to learn how this whole system works. In this seventh film, Kittridge is wiser, more serious, but somehow sadder. I loved playing it that way. »

It is not said in Dead Reckoning Part One If Kittridge and Hunt have crossed paths often since Prague, but the Toronto-born actor still indicates that the relationship between the two has evolved. “Kittridge has partly resigned himself to Ethan’s ways. He recognizes that he is an exceptional part of the IMF, but has difficulty accepting all the power he possesses and allows himself. According to him, his abilities and his honesty do not give him all the rights. »
This is how their fascinating rivalry begins again. And it will continue in the second part scheduled for June 2024.
