In a press release published Wednesday, the Order of Chemists is saddened to see that influencers claim that the ingredients contained in sunscreen are harmful to the skin. In his opinion, such comments “devoid of scientific basis” can endanger public health.
The president of the Order of Chemists, Michel Alsayegh, recalls that sunscreens are designed to protect the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun and that scientific research demonstrates the effectiveness and safety of these products when They are used according to the instructions.
According to him, “it is worrying to see pseudo-experts encouraging the population to forgo sun protection, thereby increasing the risks of skin cancer and other damage caused by UV rays.”
There are many videos circulating on social media in which influencers claim that sunscreen can cause breakouts, “age” the skin and even cause cancer. This movement led to an outcry from several experts from across Canada and the United States.
The Ordre des chemistes du Québec points out that even if influencers have a large audience, they “generally do not have the scientific expertise necessary to evaluate chemical products and their safety”.
“Sun protection is an essential measure to prevent skin damage and skin cancer. Sun protection products, when used correctly, are safe and effective,” confirms the Order.
Mr. Alsayegh calls on influencers to weigh the consequences of the comments they make on social networks, since “sharing unverified information can have significant consequences on public health”.
