“Probably Colorado Avalanche captain Joe Sakic, who doesn’t lift the Stanley Cup in 2001 after receiving it from Gary Bettman as tradition dictates, but gives it to Raymond Bourque to lift first after more than 20 years of waiting. »

“Reading the stories of your journalists, there is one that immediately jumped out at me: Turin 2006, cross-country skiing in the team sprint. Our daughters, Sara Renner and Beckie Scott, are in contention for a medal. Renner breaks his stick on a climb. A Norwegian trainer gives her a replacement stick while running beside her. Canada finally wins the silver. Norway finished fourth. For the record, the Norwegian coach will be rewarded by the Canadian team after the race. »

“On April 6, 2018, 10 players and 6 staff members of the Humboldt Broncos, a team of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, were killed in a tragic traffic accident. Throughout the world of North American hockey, tributes have been paid to the victims. Among these, a very emotional moment occurred before the game between the Winnipeg Jets and the Chicago Blackhawks, all of whose players wore the Broncos name instead of their own on the back of their jerseys and who made a circle in the center of the ice rink. »

“A few years ago, one of my sixth-grade students, who was very well positioned to win the RSEQ cross-country [Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec], voluntarily stopped running 200 m from the finish line to lend a hand to a youngster who had just fallen. He eventually finished eighth supporting the other student. This selfless gesture restored my faith in humanity. We gave him an honorary merit in front of the whole school for his empathy and his devotion to others. »

“In the playoffs, Tiger Williams wanted to attack the referee and Larry Robinson grabbed him around the body, while talking to him, in order to calm him down. Despite his great desire to win, Robinson judged that it was better for this opposing player not to make this gesture. When he finally let him go, Williams understood the gaffe he could have made. Hideki Matsuyama is the first Japanese golfer to win the Masters Tournament.

“In April 2021, Hideki Matsuyama became the first Japanese golfer to win the Masters Tournament. While Matsuyama celebrated his victory on the green, his caddie Shota Hayafuji discreetly retrieved the flag of the 18and hole in memory, as tradition dictates. Hayafuji didn’t know the CBS cameraman was filming him. After putting the rod back in the hole, we see him take off his cap, turn towards the aisle of 18and hole and bow with respect to the mythical course that his boss had just dominated to obtain his historic victory. A noble and humble gesture that is rare to see in professional sport. A great gesture of sportsmanship which recognized Augusta’s career as a formidable opponent who deserves respect! Chills. »

“Definitely, seeing Juan Martin del Potro consoling Nicolas Almagro at Roland-Garros! It was very touching. One of the finest gestures in sport. »

“Our coach is called Boris, but the whole team calls him Bo. A week away from the end of our hockey season, we parents received an email from the coaching staff asking us to prepare our children for a different game. We were well positioned to finish top of the league, but Bo told us that the last team we were going to play against had lost all their games and “no kid should have a year without a win”. The idea was to make the match competitive with several changes and see the magic happen on the other side of the ice. The children were ready: the match would be difficult. Unfortunately, the end of the story is less nice: the COVID-19 decided to shorten the season and we were therefore unable to play this famous match. Still, this email from Bo brought us back to the happiness of the children and the game, whether they are on our team or the opposing team. »

“Match at Goodison Park where West Ham (my club for reasons that take too long to explain) faced Everton in December 2000. I was living in London then and remember the match: 1-1, we play stoppage time while getting injured the opposing goalkeeper. Di Canio sees a chance to win, but catches the ball to allow the trainers to rescue Paul Gerrard. As the ineffable Hammers coach Harry Redknapp said in a post-game interview: “I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry when he did it.” What a gesture! »

“The epitome of elegance and respect was when Raymond Bourque of the Bruins took off his number 7 jersey to reveal his new 77 in front of Phil Esposito from which the 7 was taken off. What class! »

“Our son tore his anterior cruciate ligament during a Diablos de Trois-Rivières football game last September. Since then, her courage and efforts to get back into shape have been touching. However, it is also his sporting spirit that has always impressed. In the fifth year of elementary school, in a tight basketball game, kneeling in front of his opponent, he ties his sneaker to him, thus delaying the throw-in of the ball. We are sawn, the referee begins by grumbling, then smiles and waits. Well done, Thomas! »
