ministries face the concerns of the sectors for which they are responsible

Legislative campaign obliges, the government only manages current affairs these days, but certain ministries must also manage the apprehensions of associations who fear seeing their subsidies cut or even eliminated in the event of a victory for the RN.

Five days before the legislative elections, Tuesday June 25, and while the RN is leading the race in the polls, the prospect of a victory for the extreme right is in the background of exchanges between ministries and sectors including they are in charge. Anti-racist associations or those working for women’s rights raise their concerns with the Ministry of Equality, with the fear that their action will be hampered and that they will find themselves deprived of subsidies. The Ministry of the City also receives calls about pending funding, when the ministry responsible for people with disabilities is contacted by associations which fear the implementation of less inclusive policies.

Faced with these concerns, the ministries are doing their best these days to sign the pending decrees, and above all to release the funds promised for 2024, even if it means anticipating the schedule of payments which were sometimes only planned for the start of the school year. “No file must be left in abeyance”, “we try to honor all the commitments made” explain the ministerial offices. The Ministry of Ecological Transition is also facing fears from local elected officials and environmental associations regarding the development of current projects. “It’s not easy to reassure them, admits an advisor, We share their concerns, but our only solution is to campaign.”

Economic circles are also attentive to the political situation. “They are more afraid of the New Popular Front”, slips an advisor to Bercy. If the boss of Medef Patrick Martin spoke publicly against the programs of the extreme right and left, many stay away from the political debate because “they do not want to insult the future: taking a position means risking alienating customers or future government interlocutors”. Besides, it is above all “instability” which concerns economic circles. American companies established in France have thus expressed to the executive their fears about the lack of visibility in tax or salary matters while for seven years Emmanuel Macron’s policy has sought to attract foreign investments. “This will be reflected in the ballot boxes, it is not possible otherwise,” wants to believe a communicator from the executive when others are resigned and predict “a butcher shop” to the current majority.

Certain ministries are more spared from the rise of concerns. Despite the imminence of the Olympic Games, the Ministry of Sports notes “relative serenity” of his interlocutors since in terms of organization everything is more or less on track. In Education too, there has been little indication of anxiety in the ministry so far, we are told. Especially because teachers are busy managing end-of-year exams.
