Minister Jean Boulet to table bill on construction site safety, GCR to inspect new homes three times instead of once

In the coming weeks, Minister of Labor Jean Boulet will table a bill that will affect the quality and safety of construction, as well as the qualification of contractors.

He made the announcement on Tuesday in Montreal, at a time when the organization Garantie de construction résidentiel (GCR) also announced that by 2029, it will gradually inspect new homes under its jurisdiction not once, but three times.

GCR administers the New Residential Building Guarantee Plan and takes care of buildings of four stories and less.

Currently, the organization employs about 20 inspectors and plans to employ nearly 100 by the end of its plan in 2029.

Minister Boulet’s future bill will go further and will not be limited to residential construction, for example. It will review the inspection and monitoring model and will also focus on certificates of conformity, the Minister of Labour announced during a meeting with the press.

Further details will follow.
