Minister Geneviève Guilbault and mayors will discuss the deficits of public transport companies on Monday

The Minister of Transport, Geneviève Guilbault, has summoned the mayors responsible for transport companies for a meeting which must take place on Monday.

M’s press secretaryme Guilbault, Maxime Roy, confirmed Friday morning the information first relayed by Radio-Canada.

This meeting will discuss “issues related to financing the deficits of public transport companies,” he said.

Relations are tense between these mayors and the Legault government over the deficits of transport companies.

Minister Guilbault was criticized for having declared last week that her ministry did not have the mission of managing public transport.

Prime Minister François Legault went further, affirming that it was easier for mayors to “beg” the Quebec government “than to clean up their expenses”.

Mayors are trying to find a solution to the significant deficits that are plaguing transport companies. These municipalities are considering several scenarios, including service cuts.

In the Montreal metropolitan region, the shortfall is estimated at $561 million.
