Tens of millions of red crabs pass through Christmas Island, Australia, leaving the forest for the coast during their annual migration.
The roads are closed due to the presence of crabs on the asphalt and on specially constructed bridges.
According to Parks Australia, this migration begins with the first rain of the wet season. The speed of their journey is dictated by the phase of the moon, with the crabs expected to arrive on the Indian Ocean shore at the end of November.
Baby red crabs often return to shore about a month later before returning to the island’s rainforest.
