Mika’s escapades – The Gorges of Saint Jaume and the Fortresses of Fenouillet

The route map

Steps

  • Park in the car park located near the church of Caudiès de Fenouillèdes.
  • From the car park, follow the Red and White markings of the GR 36, join the D117 road and cross it to take the Ermitage road (D9).
Cross the railway line and leave the road about ten meters later when the GR turns right.
Stay on the GR which takes you to the Ermitage Notre-Dame de Laval.
  • After a well-deserved visit to this cultural and religious place, return to the GR which takes the D9 which you will leave a little further on just before the road bridge over the Saint-Jaume stream to take the marked path which goes opposite.
  • Very beautiful section that takes you through the Gorges de Saint-Jaume where there is a waterfall and a footbridge that you will cross. Find a road further.
Turn left and left again a few meters later.
Cross the Saint-Jaume stream again and turn right before reaching an intersection.
  • Leave the GR 36 to follow the yellow marked route to the right until another junction.
Find the GR and go on the track to the left until an intersection a hundred meters further.
  • Turn left to go to the Sabarda Tower (20 min) with sumptuous panoramas.
  • After visiting the tower, return to the intersection.
  • Continue the route on the left and arrive at the village of Fenouillet at the Saint-André Church.
  • Leave the GR which goes to the left in order to continue opposite in the direction of the viscount’s castle.
Further on, ignore the street that runs to the left in order to stay on the main street until a small path goes to the left which leads you to the coveted castle and its superb panorama.
Namely, that on this section there are several explanatory panels on the history of Fenouillet and its fortresses.
  • Return to church.
  • Follow the GR 36 to the right. Abandon the road at the bend which goes to the right to take the road opposite and find the past junction of the outward journey.
  • Go right by the opposite way to the outward journey and find the parking lot to end your hike.
