This is the 36th edition of the Visa pour l’image festival, which takes place every year in Perpignan. In this article, we have selected five photographs from the 26 exhibitions that will be held until September 15, 2024, and which highlight certain situations from all over the world.

“A world in turmoil” – Paula Bronstein – Getty Images

American photographer Paula Bronstein, 70, has been capturing conflicts and natural disasters for 40 years. She says: “I witnessed the strength and incredible spirit of the Ukrainian people, as well as their patience.”

“The two walls” – Alejandro Cegarra – The New York Times

Across America, the train photographed by Alejandro Cegarra is known as “the beast” or “bestia” in Spanish. The 34-year-old Venezuelan photographer chose to immortalize the journey of the 400,000 migrants who cross Mexico each year.

“On the way” – Ad Van Denderen – VU Agency

“On the way”, this title ofThe exhibition also refers to the life of the Dutch photographer Ad Van Denderen : a life where the 80-year-old man was constantly traveling.

“Displaced by the M23” – Hugh Kinsella Cunningham

Since 2019, Hugh Kinsella Cunningham lives in eastern Congo. Two years ago in particular, that it covers the M23 conflict.

“M23 is a rebel group equipped and supported by the Rwandan army which has been leading a brutal offensive since 2022”explains the photojournalist.

He sees his work as a “advocating for the rights of civilians caught between the front lines of a labor conflict.”

“Comedy – French: theater stories” – Jean-Louis Fernandez

For a year, the Comédie Française troupe welcomed the photographer during its rehearsals, performances and filming Iean-Louis Fernandez.

His photographs have been described as “a truth of the theater” by actor Denis Podalydès.
