Migrants: a shipwreck in the English Channel shattered a love story

On Wednesday 24 November, 27 migrants drowned off the coast of Calais (Pas-de-Calais) as they tried to reach the UK. Among them, a young Iraqi woman who dreamed of joining her future husband.

In her empty room in Iraq, only two photos remain in which 24-year-old Maryam Nuri Hama Amin poses with her fiance. He lives in the United Kingdom, she wanted to join him by crossing the Channel. According to her family, she is one of 27 people who died after the sinking off Calais. (Pas-de-Calais) Wednesday 24 November. His death has not been officially confirmed by France. It is the fiancé, without news, who warned his family in Kurdistan, plunging his relatives into grief.

The young woman had an Italian visa. Several times she had attempted to re-enter Britain legally. Without any other solution, she ended up paying a smuggler and boarding a makeshift boat without ever telling her relatives so as not to worry them. His father calls on the other refugees not to sacrifice their lives by attempting this clandestine and perilous crossing.
