A new decree will make it easier for midwives to perform abortions requiring surgery. A victory for the profession.

The midwives won their case. From the end of March, they will be able to practice instrumental abortions more widely, which require a surgical procedure. “The decree now allows them to do it and to do it in the short term”, indicates Catherine Vautrin, Minister of Labor, Health and Solidarity. The profession sees this relaxation as a victory for the choice of women.

Only one doctor must be present in the establishment

“Maternity centers which did not completely meet the required conditions [auront] the possibility of having midwives who can offer this care to women”, explains Caroline Combot, president of the ONSFF, a midwives’ union. A midwife will be able to carry out an instrumental abortion with only one doctor present in the establishment where she practices, compared to four previously. The government has not touched the conscience clause of doctors, but has expanded the number of people who can perform this act.
