Midterm elections in the United States | The Press

A majority of our readers fear a Republican victory in the midterm elections, which would pose a real danger to democracy, they say. Here is an overview of the responses to our call to all on the elections in our southern neighbours.

Themes best exploited by Republicans

I think that Americans, like Quebeckers for that matter, will vote with their wallets. Like us, they suffer from inflation and the one to blame is a Democrat. Abortion rights, people’s safety and safeguarding democracy are themes that are better exploited by Republicans than Democrats. I sincerely hope I am wrong.

nothing to cheer about

Yes, I have fears that the Republicans will regain the advantage. Yes, democracy is in jeopardy, because despite all the legal action, some still believe that Trump won the 2020 election. The radical right is very present. There is nothing pleasing about this. Lies, disinformation, conspiracies have the upper hand. I sincerely hope that the Democrats keep their advantages, because
other groups may be targeted than pro-abortions. A little decency would do good.

Democracy undermined

Yes, I am so worried about the results of the midterm elections in the United States that my husband and I have made the decision to sell our condo in Florida if the Republicans win a majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate. Even if they do not win this majority, several Republican candidates are already saying that they will not accept results against them. Where is democracy if election results are no longer respected? When everyone is armed and there is a deep division of beliefs, it is a very fertile ground for violence. Let’s hope that common sense and honest ethics will influence American politicians.

A toxic climate

To say that I am concerned about the US election next Tuesday is an understatement. The current political climate in the United States is definitely toxic. And a certain deposed ex-president is having fun throwing oil on the fire, hoping to score points for his eventual return to the White House. The United States liked to see itself as the greatest democracy in the world and intended to export its political model and democracy. Today, one wonders if this great model of democracy is not tipping over into obscurantism and authoritarianism. My country, right or wrong?

Notorious unpopularity

Without a doubt, the Republicans will take control of both chambers and, in the process, inflict a snub on President Biden. His unpopularity is notorious and that of his running mate is just as much. The hegemony of the United States is being flouted like never before. The world order is reshaping itself in front of them and the leadership in the presidency is unable to stop it. After the anticipated defeat, a new leader will have to be found for the next election in two years.

Biden does not make the weight

I fear the Republicans will take control of both chambers. All that will be missing is Trump’s return as the 2024 presidential candidate and the circle will be complete. It’s unfortunate for Democrats, but Biden doesn’t measure up. The United States will be on the far right. They say we get the politicians we deserve. We will be well served.

Straight to the crisis

I’m very concerned that the worst-case scenario will play out: 1) Republicans take control of the Senate and Congress in the midterm elections on Tuesday; 2) carried by these results (and to protect himself from all his legal problems) Trump presents himself in 2024 and wins in front of Joe Biden overwhelmed by events; 3) freed from all constraints, Trump surrounds himself with lackeys and leads the country towards the worst constitutional crisis in its history. My only hope lies in the voters who declare themselves independent (swing voters). Will there be enough of them to also fear this scenario to block the takeover of at least one of the two chambers and above all, above all, to block the return to power of this evil president? Part of the answer will be known on Tuesday. I hope to be reassured.

We should be worried

Yes indeed, several elements can and should worry us as Canadians! We are witnessing in real time the decline of the American empire! Trump and his tribe of obtuse Republicans are responsible for this dangerous tangent; Americans are seeing the disappearance of several hard-won rights, such as the right to abortion! And this is only the beginning of this decay of acquired rights which constitute the very fiber of the Americans! And if the climatosceptic Republicans take control of the planet, it is obvious that everything that has been done or decided by the Democrats will be reduced to nothing! And it will be lobbies like the NRA, the dirty car lobby, the gas and oil lobby that will take control of American politics. And the question to ask is this: did Trump pull off his January 2021 coup? The answer is yes ! By profoundly modifying the legal structure of the United States and especially that of the Supreme Court, the Republicans have taken control of the country, and we should be seriously concerned here in Canada with all this movement which is done towards the right. And worry about the next Canadian election which could install in power a Conservative Party very close to the values of the Republican Party.
