French soldiers of the UNIFIL make final preparations before leaving for a village in southern Lebanon, on the border with Israel. In total, 700 soldiers make up the French contingent, in addition to some 10,000 Blue Helmets from 47 countries. Their mission is to ensure the application of notice 17-01 of the United Nations Security Council. It aims to stop the conflict between Israel and Lebanon, which began in 2006.

Missions for the benefit of populations

To do this, the soldiers are on daily patrols, in collaboration with the Lebanese army. “The first of my missions is to be the eyes of my bosses. I don’t have to interpret”, explains Sergeant Alexandre, patrol leader at the Intelligence and Intervention Squadron. The French contingent also carries out actions for the benefit of the population of southern Lebanon in the areas of health, education and development.
