Microsoft improves quarterly profits by 48% thanks to the cloud

(San Francisco) Microsoft saw its profits jump this summer, with $ 20.5 billion in net income from July to September, an increase of 48% in one year.

In the first quarter of its staggered fiscal year, the IT giant also exceeded investor expectations in terms of revenue, with revenue of 45.3 billion (+ 22%), according to its earnings release released Tuesday.

These performances are driven by the cloud (remote computing), which has become the engine of the company through its various activities. Its Office office suite and associated data storage and processing services for businesses thus improved sales by 18%.

Azure, its main cloud computing arm, also grew in half.

As for its personal computing business, which includes the Windows operating system, computers and video games (Xbox), it earned $ 13.3 billion.

“PCs are more central in our lives than ever”, assured the director of Windows Panos Panay to AFP in early October, during the deployment of Windows 11.

According to him, the pandemic, with the adoption of telework and new digital habits, has transformed laptops into more “emotional” objects, which “accompany us from home to work”.

Microsoft also mentioned that Windows sales to manufacturers have increased by 10%, despite the supply constraints in electronic components that affect the industry.
