The population of the Gaza Strip is exposed to famine. Friday March 15, an NGO circumvented the blockade of the enclave by sea with a ship loaded with 200 tons of food. A Spanish-American star chef is behind the initiative.

He was on board the first food aid boat from Cyprus, arriving in Gaza on Friday March 15. Two months earlier, he was also in the Palestinian enclave, where he prepared meals in pots. Michelin-starred chef José Andrés, 54, takes risks to help Gazans. He is at the head of several gourmet restaurants, known for popularizing tapas in the United States. In 2001, after the earthquake in Haiti, he founded the American NGO World Central Kitchen.

Peace one plate at a time

The Spanish-American chef travels the world with his volunteers cooking for disaster victims. 37 million meals have been distributed since the start of the war in Gaza, by truck and even by boat. He considers the work of his NGO sometimes much more effective than that of large organizations. “I want to believe that through our action, we succeed in giving a glimmer of hope to people“, affirms the cook. José Andrès is today among the 100 most influential people in the world. His dream? That cooking can one day bring all the belligerents together around the table.
