Michel Sardou explains why he always makes a “mouth” on his album covers

Kanye West, Kristen Steward, Sean Penn… Many stars find it difficult to crack a smile when they find themselves in front of photographers’ flashes.s! And in France, it is the same for an artist who no longer needs to be introduced: Michel Sardou!

And for good reason, in fifty years of career, the interpreter of Connemara Lakes

recorded 26 studio albums (and 18 live albums), received five Victoires de la musique and sold more than 100 million records… A career crowned with success and marked by impressive figures even though the photos of the singer smiling on a project cover can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

A closed face Figaro magazine tried to decode via a portrait dedicated to the artist this Thursday October 19, 2023. “It is an assumed marketing strategy which is based on the character of the singer: Michel is impatient and does not like being photographed. He does not know how to smile on command, does not want to pose and treats the promotion as the worst test. So Sardou complains. He doesn’t offer his best image”, indicated our colleagues, subsequently quoting its producer Régis Talard: “Sardou making a face, we are responsible for it, even if we did not create it. It was his nature not to smile. We were therefore in agreement with what he gave off, with his image.”

“I am accused of not smiling”

An austere image that Michel Sardou abandoned at the beginning of the 2000s with his album French. On the cover, the artist strikes a pose with a slight smile. However, this 29th project produced and entirely composed by Michel Fugain does not have the expected success.

Low sales that the singer commented on as follows: “People accuse me of not smiling. The only time I smiled was my worst sale”.
