According to the demonstrators, if the mayor of Longueuil goes ahead with the slaughter of deer, she will have “blood on her hands”, as well as “as all the members of the municipal council”. The group has also repeated several times in chorus the same slogan: “Catherine Fournier has blood on her hands”.
The demonstrators criticized the mayor for not listening to citizens. “She won’t have the last word,” repeated one of them at the microphone.
Remember that the City of Longueuil plans to proceed with the euthanasia of some sixty animals in the near future in order to reduce the population in the Michel-Chartrand park with an area of 1.8 km2. Catherine Fournier had pledged during the election campaign to follow the recommendations of a consultation table set up by the administration of the former mayor, Sylvie Parent.
According to the report, the park could only accommodate between 10 and 15 deer while its current population is estimated at more than 70 animals.
According to the TVA network, lawyer Anne-France Goldwater recently informed the city that she now had the mandate of the organization Rescue Animal “to take the necessary legal steps against any euthanasia”.
“As indicated on several occasions by the mayor since mid-January, we will not comment on any possible judicialization of the file, and since this is obviously the case now, we maintain the same position”, replied to The Press Louis-Philip Prévost, press officer for Mayor Fournier.
Forty people had indicated on Facebook their intention to participate in the demonstration organized by the group Montreal Animal Defenders. About twenty people were present at the beginning of the afternoon.
The demonstration took place peacefully in the presence of several police officers.
