Michael Hayböck, a ski jumper from Kirchberg-Thening, announced his retirement from competitive skiing after the current season, a decision influenced by the birth of his son and a desire for clarity in his life. While initially aiming for the 2026 Olympics, he feels ready to conclude his career on a high note. He plans to focus on family and studies post-retirement.

A Shocking Announcement from the ÖSV Eagles: Michael Hayböck from Kirchberg-Thening has decided to retire from competitive ski jumping after the conclusion of the current season. The announcement came unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 4, through a press release.

In his statement, Hayböck explained, “The choice to step away from my career as a top athlete has been a gradual process. The idea of leaving competitive sports first crossed my mind in November 2023, even before the 23/24 season kicked off.” He mentioned that he had only confided in a select few people from his personal circle at that time, emphasizing the importance of maintaining his performance while considering this significant life change. “I think I managed to keep my focus on sports effectively during these months,” he added.

Rediscovering Clarity Through Fatherhood

Initially, Hayböck had aspirations to compete until the 2026 Olympic Games. However, he kept his options open. “The birth of my son last fall shifted my perspective dramatically. Being a father provided me with clarity, leading me to decide that the end of this season is the ideal time to retire,” Hayböck shared. He noted that his decision was made even before participating in this year’s Four Hills Tournament, and he feels physically prepared to conclude his career at a high point.

Embracing the Final Moments

Hayböck has chosen to make the most of the remaining time in his sport: “I want to savor every moment and give my all until the very end. Competing as a top athlete has always been a privilege, and despite the ups and downs, I’ve had remarkable experiences and memories throughout my journey.”

Looking Ahead to New Adventures

Post-retirement, Hayböck plans to focus on his family and complete his ongoing studies. “I’m excited about the prospect of living without the daily grind after so many years. I will remain fully dedicated until the season wraps up, striving to achieve the best for Austria and hopefully secure more victories with my teammates,” he stated.

A Bittersweet Farewell

Hayböck takes pride in his growth as both an athlete and an individual, maintaining consistent performance over the years, even during challenging times like his disc surgery. “The relationships I’ve built have significantly impacted me. My close friendship with my roommate, Stefan Kraft, has flourished, and I will surely miss that aspect of my life,” he reflected.

Gratitude for Support

Hayböck expressed heartfelt thanks to his family, especially his wife and parents, for their unwavering support throughout his journey. He also acknowledged his brothers, Stefan and Alex, who have always been there for him in the world of ski jumping.

“I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to my coaches, from my early days in the club to the support I received in Stams and from the national coaches, including Andreas Widhölzl, as well as the service teams and all the support staff. A special thank you goes to Patrick Murnig, who has been by my side since I was 17, supporting my personal and athletic growth. Our long collaboration has evolved into a bond that transcends mere professionalism,” Hayböck concluded.
