Miami Tournament | Jannik Sinner is the first to qualify for the semi-finals

(Miami) The Italian Jannik Sinner signed a 20e victory in 2024 on Wednesday, reaching the semi-finals of the Miami Open by virtue of a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Czech Tomas Machac.

The recent Australian Open champion therefore reached the semi-finals for the third time in the four most recent editions of this tournament.

Sinner (third) will face the Russian Daniil Medvedev (fourth) in the semi-final, who defeated the Chilean Nicolas Jarry (23e) 6-2 and 7-6 (7).

Sinner will be playing in a fourth semi-final this season and has only suffered one defeat this season. He reached the final in Miami in 2021 and 2023, but lost each time.

“It was a really tough match, but I’m happy with my performance,” Sinner said.

Aged 22, Sinner said Machac (60e) had served well at the start of the match and his aggressiveness kept things close for a while. But the Italian ultimately broke his opponent four times to take control of the duel.

“I always say that when you feel good on the court, it’s easy to play tennis,” added the winner. But it starts with a workout where you feel worse and you keep training to make a difference.

“Right now I feel really good on the pitch,” he continued.

On the women’s side, the American Danielle Collins (53e) defeated Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia (27e) 6-3 and 6-2. She reached the final four for the first time in six years, when she reached there as a qualifier.

This defeat ends a brilliant run for Garcia, who eliminated major tournament champions Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff. She hasn’t been able to slow down Collins, who has won 10 of her 11 sets so far in this tournament.

Collins has also won her four meetings against Garcia on the WTA circuit. However, she qualified this immaculate record against the Frenchwoman.

“Against a player like Caro, it forces me to be more focused, because I know I don’t want to give her an inch,” Collins said.

She now has an appointment with the Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova (16e), who defeated American Jessica Pegula (fifth) 3-6, 6-4 and 6-4.

“I think this is my greatest accomplishment on the court,” Alexandrova said. The semi-finals are a bonus. »

In doubles, Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealander Erin Routliffe beat Americans Sloane Stephens and Ashlyn Krueger 6-3, 4-6 and 10-4.
