Miami Tournament | Fernandez and Shapovalov advance to next round, Auger-Aliassime eliminated

(Miami) Laval resident Leylah Fernandez won her first match on Saturday at the Miami tennis tournament.



Fernandez beat Colombian Emiliana Arango 6-4, 6-2. The match was scheduled for Friday, but rain forced the tournament to resume action the next day.

Fernandez had no aces and committed four double faults. She won 70% of her points in first balls.

Lavalloise, 21e in the world, had six break points and converted them all.

For his part, the Canadian Denis Shapovalov (126e) faced the 11e world racket Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round.

Shapovalov won 6-2, 6-4, clinching the first set in less than 40 minutes.

Shapovalov won 90% of his points with his first serve and gave Tsitsipas no break points.

Montrealer Félix Auger-Aliassime played against fourth seed Alexander Zverev in the evening. Auger-Aliassime lost 6-2, 6-4.

The Quebecer hit seven aces, compared to two on the German’s side. No double faults were committed in the match.

Zverev did not concede any break points to Auger-Aliassime.

In other clashes, world third racket Jannik Sinner beat compatriot Andrea Vavassori 6-3, 6-4 in the second round.

Sinner is now 12-0 against Italian opponents.

Daniil Medvedev, fourth in the world and third seed with the absence of Novak Djokovic, beat Marton Fucsovics 6-4, 6-2.

Andy Murray, tournament champion in 2009 and 2013, won 7-6 (0), 6-3 against Tomas Martin Etcheverry (29e).

Murray had lost his last nine matches against top-50 opponents.

Americans Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe both lost their second-round clashes.

Fritz lost 6-3, 6-4 to Thiago Seyboth Wild, while Christopher O’Connell defeated Tiafoe 7-5, 7-6 (5).

Tommy Paul, another American, led 6-4, 1-2 against Martin Damm Jr., but was forced to retire after what appeared to be an ankle injury.

Among the women, the favorite Iga Swiatek quickly defeated Camila Giorgi 6-1, 6-1 in just over an hour. Swiatek broke his opponent’s serve five times.

Fifth seed Jessica Pegula defeated Zhu Lin 6-4, 4-1 (retirement).

Naomi Osaka won her duel 6-2, 7-6 (5) against Elina Svitolina. The four-time major tournament champion converted three of her five break points.
