Miami Tournament | Caroline Garcia beats world No.3 Coco Gauff and joins the quarters

(Miami) Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia eliminated a second major tournament champion to reach the quarter-finals of the Miami Tennis Open on Monday.

This time, Garcia (27e) defeated the American Coco Gauff (third), reigning US Open champion, in three sets of 6-3, 1-6 and 6-2.

On Sunday, she won 7-6 (4), 7-5 against the Japanese Naomi Osaka, four-time Grand Slam champion.

Garcia said it was her first victory against a player from top 10 for a long time.

“You keep working and trying to stay positive with what’s coming, [espérant] that it will bear fruit, she declared. Sometimes it’s very hard. But I’m lucky to have very good people with me to help me and stay positive when I’m struggling.

“It means a lot to have this little reward and to continue in the tournament,” she added.

Kazakh Elena Rybakina (fourth) also reached the quarters by winning 6-3, 7-5 against American Madison Keys (18e).

Rybakina has an appointment with the Greek Maria Sakkari (ninth) due to the withdrawal of the Russian Anna Kalinskaya (25e), injured.
