(Miami) The Miami Marlins completed the five-year $ 56 million deal given to right-hander Sandy Alcantara on Tuesday.
The pact includes an option for a sixth season.
This is the longest deal ever awarded by the current group of owners, led by Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman.
The 26-year-old Alcantara was 9-15 and averaged 3.19 last season, making 33 starts.
He was one of three major league baseball pitchers to total at least 200 innings and 200 strikeouts.
Alcantara had six starts of at least eight innings where he allowed a maximum of one point – a top of the big leagues in this regard.
The Marlins handed him the ball in their inaugural game in 2020 and 2021.
