MG is launching the MGS5 EV, a competitively priced electric SUV that follows its successful MG4 sedan strategy. The design features dual-level headlights and a traditional aesthetic. Inside, it offers a modern cabin with advanced tech, including a large touchscreen and safety features like multiple airbags. Two battery options provide varying ranges of up to 480 km. Starting at £28,495 in the UK, it faces competition from similar models, with a European launch expected in May 2025.
With the introduction of the MGS5 EV, MG is replicating its successful strategy from the compact sedan sector, previously showcased with the MG4, by offering a functional electric SUV designed to keep costs competitive. Following the reveal of its Chinese model, MG has now shared detailed information about this SUV on its official site. Here’s everything you should know.
Design That Stands Out
The front design of the MGS5 EV draws some inspiration from luxury models like the Porsche Macan and Audi Q6 e-tron, particularly noticeable with its dual-level headlight setup: the LED daytime running lights are positioned at the top, with the main beams located lower in the bumper.
However, the similarities end there. The overall design of the SUV leans towards a traditional aesthetic. Its shape is neither overly aggressive nor particularly sleek; the door handles are not flush with the body, and black plastic accents the waistline. The wheels are constructed with a design that minimizes air resistance, enhancing efficiency. At the rear, a distinctive light strip spans the width of the vehicle, reminiscent of the MG4.
In terms of size, the MGS5 EV measures 4.47 meters in length, 1.85 meters in width, and 1.62 meters in height.
Interior Comfort and Safety Features
The interior of the MGS5 EV has seen notable upgrades compared to the MG4, as indicated by the provided images and information. The cabin exudes a warmer atmosphere thanks to thoughtfully chosen color schemes and higher-quality materials.
Drivers will appreciate the 10.25-inch display with customizable options, along with a prominent 12.8-inch touchscreen positioned centrally on the dashboard.
The high-end Trophy model of the MGS5 EV includes a wireless phone charger, along with a 360-degree camera and a hands-free electric tailgate. This feature grants access to a spacious trunk with a capacity of 453 liters, which expands to an impressive 1,441 liters when the rear seats are folded.
On the safety front, the MGS5 EV is equipped with a variety of advanced driving aids, including blind spot monitoring and rear collision warnings. The vehicle also boasts seven airbags throughout the cabin, including front, side, curtain, and a central airbag for enhanced protection.
Performance and Range
The MGS5 EV utilizes the Modular Scalable Platform and operates on a 400 V system rather than an 800 V, resulting in a maximum charging power of 139 kW. This allows for a 10 to 80% charge in just 28 minutes for the version with the larger battery.
Two battery options are available. The base model comes with a 49 kWh battery paired with a 170-horsepower motor, offering a range of 340 km on the WLTP cycle, making it ideal for urban drivers who don’t often hit the highways. Notably, this entry-level model has the highest consumption rate in the range at 16.6 kWh/100 km.
The Long Range variant features a more powerful 231-horsepower motor and a 64 kWh battery, with a WLTP range of up to 480 km. This model showcases a consumption rating of 15.5 kWh/100 km, indicating that it not only delivers more power but is also more efficient.
Pricing and Market Position
The MGS5 EV is already making waves in the UK market, where it has been tested by outlets like Autocar, who praised its rapid charging capabilities, competitive pricing, and overall maneuverability. However, the European and Korean competitors offer similar features at comparable price points, and some testers expressed disappointment regarding efficiency.
In the UK, the MGS5 EV starts at £28,495, translating to approximately €34,141. For context, the Skoda Elroq begins at £31,500, providing a better range, and the Kia EV3 starts at £32,995, also boasting superior range.
According to a spokesperson from MG France, the MGS5 EV is expected to arrive in May 2025. While pricing details remain undisclosed, it will be sold without ecological bonuses and may be subject to additional customs charges for electric vehicles manufactured in China.
