The Ministry of Culture has initiated legal proceedings with the French authorities and written to the auction house Millon.

Mexico’s historical heritage is not for sale. The Mexican government is seeking to prevent the auction of around thirty pre-Hispanic pieces which is to take place on January 28 in France, the Ministry of Culture said on Wednesday January 26.
Mexican Culture Secretary Alejandra Frausto has sent a letter to the Millon auction house in which she asks to stop the sale “taking into account the historical, symbolic and cultural values of these properties, which outweigh any commercial interest”.
The ministry also specified that legal proceedings had been initiated with the French authorities and through diplomatic channels to stop the auction. For several years, the Mexican government has been trying to recover its historical heritage, scattered in private collections around the world, but not always successfully.
