(Mexico City) Mexico’s capital recorded a record temperature on Monday when thermometers reached 34.2 degrees Celsius, the head of the National Water Commission said.
“Today a historic maximum temperature record was set for Mexico City,” National Water Commission (Conagua) Director General German Martinez Santoyo wrote on X.
“The 33.9°C reached on May 9, 1998 was exceeded by the 34.2 recorded today at the Tacubaya meteorological observatory,” he said.
Mexico City and its metropolitan area have more than 20 million inhabitants. The town hall has issued a weather alert, with high temperatures expected to continue for the coming days.
Almost all of Mexico is affected by the heat wave, and in eight Mexican states bordered by the Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico, temperatures are expected to exceed 45°C.
