Four people died and 15 others were injured Wednesday evening when a marquee collapsed on the stage of a rally of Mexican presidential candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez in northern Mexico, the president said. Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
The Mexican president cited, in a message published on his X account Wednesday evening, a report from the governor of the state of Nuevo León, Samuel García, who reported “four deaths and 15 injured” after the accident.
The marquee which housed Jorge Álvarez Maynez’s podium, at a meeting in northern Mexico, collapsed, causing “victims”, the candidate and his campaign team announced earlier.
“I am doing well and am in communication with the authorities to follow up on what happened. The most important thing at the moment is to take care of the victims of the accident,” Mr. Maynez wrote on X.
The accident occurred in the town of San Pedro Garza, which is part of the metropolitan area of the industrial center of Monterrey, in the state of Nuevo Leon (northeast).
Mr. Maynez added that his team members who were injured are being treated in hospital. “I am returning to the scene to support the victims,” he said.
Videos broadcast on local networks show the moment a giant screen collapsed on Mr. Maynez and other members of the center-left Movimiento Ciudadano party, who managed to take cover.
Other images published on X show people being pulled out of a pile of iron structures.
For his part, the governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García, clarified that the region was experiencing thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rains.
“There was a misfortune. Strong winds caused a stage to collapse during an election campaign closing here in San Pedro,” he explained in a video posted on his social networks.
