(Tuxtla Gutiérrez) At least 49 migrants crammed into a truck were killed Thursday in a road accident in southeastern Mexico, the Chiapas state prosecutor’s office said.
The accident, near the regional capital Tuxtla Gutiérrez, also left 37 injured, three of whom are in serious condition, we learned from the same source. State Governor Rutilio Escandon expressed “solidarity” with the victims on Twitter.
The migrants were crammed into a truck whose driver lost control according to the first explanations to the press of the Civil Protection on the spot.
“The responsibilities (for the accident) will be established according to the law,” added the governor.
The accident took place in the state of Chiapas near the border with Guatemala, the gateway for migrants from Central America (mainly Honduras and El Salvador).
Transporting them by truck is one of the common methods used by smugglers to transport undocumented migrants to the United States.
