Mexican official charged over fire at migrant center

Mexico City — A senior Mexican migration service official was charged with homicide on Saturday in connection with a fire that killed 40 migrants at a detention center in late March. Salvador Gonzalez Guerrero, who headed the National Institute for Migration in the northern state of Chihuahua, was arrested on April 16 in Ciudad Juárez. It was in this border town of the United States that the tragedy occurred on the night of
March 27 to 28. Security camera footage showed that once the fire broke out, neither immigration staff nor security guards came to the aid of migrants locked in their cells when the fire started.
