The risk of forest fires is “very high” in the Pyrénées-Orientales department for the day of Saturday August 24, announcement Météo-France. The meteorological agency also warns of a risk “pupil” fires in two other departments: Drôme and Vaucluse.
“This is the first time in the summer of 2024 that the red level [danger de feux très élevé] is reached”explains the institute. This red level is explained by “very favourable atmospheric conditions, greatly increasing the danger of forest and vegetation fires”The department is at risk of a southerly wind. “quite strong (…) with gusts of around 70 km/h”. “Humidity will be very low (around 20-30%) and temperatures could reach over 38°C”continues Météo-France.
“It is therefore essential to adopt the right reflexes”alerts the institute and asks everyone to “throw cigarette butts in an ashtray, do your work away from vegetation, organize barbecues at home on a terrace and away from vegetation” to limit the risk of fire starting.
