Around 7 p.m., a call was made to 911 to report a conflict between two people in an apartment on Aylwin Street, between Sherbrooke and Hochelaga streets.
The victim, a young woman in her twenties, was hit in the upper body at least once by a knife. She was found in critical condition, before being taken to hospital, where there are still fears for her life.
A 32-year-old man, located not far from the scene of the altercation, was arrested by the Service de la police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM).
The link between the victim and the suspect is not known at this time, but that is what investigators will try to determine in the coming hours, said SPVM spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant.
A security perimeter was also erected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the case.
