Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve | Pedestrian hit by truck remains in critical condition

A 75-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured after being hit by a truck late Wednesday afternoon in the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district. Montreal police have opened an investigation.

The Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) reports having been called to intervene around 5 p.m., at the corner of Langelier Boulevard and Sherbrooke Street.

Once on scene, patrol officers located a pedestrian on the ground. The 75-year-old man was then unconscious and “seriously injured,” said agent Caroline Chèvrefils, spokesperson for the SPVM.

The victim was rushed to a hospital, where his life is feared at present, his state of health being considered critical.

As for the driver of the truck, a 30-year-old man, he was not injured, but suffered a nervous shock which was treated on site. He was therefore not taken to hospital.

According to initial information, the trucker “was traveling on Langelier Boulevard in a southerly direction and once at the intersection with Sherbrooke he made a left turn towards the east,” said Mr.me Honeysons. It was at this moment that the impact with the pedestrian occurred.

A large police perimeter was set up to let investigators comb the scene. Montreal police, who had called on the population to avoid the area, announced the reopening of traffic around 8 p.m. on Wednesday evening.
