Mercedes-Benz announced last week its intention to use augmented reality in all of its Canadian dealerships to improve the efficiency of diagnostics and repairs.
What appears to be science fiction will thus become reality. The technicians will put on HoloLens 2 connected glasses which will first allow them to communicate in real time with the brand’s specialists all over the planet to collaborate in the diagnosis of a repair, for example, as much by means of the image captured by glasses only with sound.
The augmented reality component will provide access to documentation projected on the lenses of the glasses. These can also focus on specific places using 3D holograms that will inform the technician about certain procedures to be done.
The stated goal of Mercedes-Benz is to improve the speed of execution of maintenance and repairs and to promote a faster transfer of information between specialists and technicians working directly on vehicles. In a context of labor shortage, this technology will be of great use. If it brings back the expected dividends, it will undoubtedly cascade to other manufacturers.
