Men’s alpine skiing | Marco Odermatt wins 12th giant slalom in a row

(Aspen) Marco Odermatt recovered from a poor start in the second run and extended his winning streak in giant slalom at the World Cup to 12 on Saturday.


A 26-year-old Swiss who is assured of the overall and SG titles, this season, Odermatt is two victories away from Ingemar Stemark’s World Cup record – 14 consecutive victories in a discipline, a mark established more than 40 years ago years.

Odermatt is the reigning Olympic gold medalist and giant slalom world champion.

He is 9-0 in giant slalom this season, adding to the three straight wins he earned to end last season.

On Saturday, he clocked 2 minutes 3.20 seconds, with winds reaching 40 km/h.

He was 0.34 seconds faster than his compatriot Loïc Meillard and 0.58 seconds faster than Timon Haugan of Norway.

This triumph was on the 13the all events combined this season for Odermatt.

This equals the men’s record for the most in a season, which he already shared with Stenmark, Hermann Maier and Marcel Hirscher.

Odermatt captured his third consecutive overall title last weekend, winning a giant slalom in California. He sealed the SG title on Friday.

He is also at the top of the downhill and super-G World Cup rankings.
