The events took place in Sorkhood, in eastern Afghanistan. Men posing as Taliban have opened fire on a wedding to have played music, killing at least three people, the Afghan government said on Saturday (October 30th).

The act was condemned by the Taliban government. “Two suspects were arrested by the Taliban and one, who escaped, is still wanted”, said government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, assuring that the attackers “who have used the name of the Islamic Emirate to settle their personal problems will face Sharia law”.

One of the victims’ relatives explained that the militiamen opened fire, killing two people and injuring two others during the wedding, as guests were spotted listening to Afghan music.

“The young men put music in a separate room, three Taliban arrived and opened fire on them. The two wounded are in serious condition.”, a witness had said earlier. Qazi Mullah Adel, spokesperson for the governorate of Nangarhar province, confirmed the incident without giving further details.

All secular music had been banned by the Taliban during their previous regime (1996-2001). While the new Islamist government has not yet legislated on this subject, it still considers listening to non-religious music contrary to its view of Islamic law.

At a press conference held earlier, Zabihullah Mujahid assured that “If someone takes it upon themselves to kill a person, even if they are our men, it is a crime and we will take him to court and he will have to face the law”.
