Friday, May 6, as the war in Ukraine continues, the survivors of the Second World War, who had to go into exile in 1940, remember.
In 1940, nearly 10 million French people took to the road to flee the Germans. At the Museum of the Resistance and the deportation of Lorris (Loiret), Colette Lanthiez, 87, entrusted the objects and clothes that she had taken during her exodus. The museum has reconstructed the departure of his family. During their flight, the civilians are targeted by the German air force. “We took refuge under a horse-drawn carriage (…) it was horrible huh, there were screams everywhere”, says Colette Lanthiez. The war in Ukraine and its refugees awakens painful memories for her.
“We had to save ourselves as quickly as possible”, remembers Jean-Marie Poirier, 87, who left as a child with his mother and two stuffed animals. He remembers fights for a little milk. Seeing the images of Ukrainian civilians, he donated clothes, hoping that the refugees would have the same luck as him: that they could return home one day.
